- DISCOVERY PLACE: Hands-on science and technology museum in downtown Charlotte. Permanent exhibits include a three-story rain forest, an aquarium with dozens of sea creatures and an omnimax theatre. - EDVENTURE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM: About 90 miles south of Charlotte in Columbia, S.C., this 67,000-square-foot facility is the biggest children’s museum in the south. Journey inside the heart, brain and stomach of forty-foot-tall Eddie, climb inside the cab of a real fire truck or shop in the lifelike grocery store. www.edventure.org
- REED GOLD MINE: Site of the first documented gold discovery in the United States. Take your kids to tour the underground tunnels and pan for gold. The mine is located in Stanfield, N.C., near the border of Mecklenburg County. 704-721-4653. www.reedmine.com
- N.C. TRANSPORTATION MUSEUM: About an hour’s drive from Charlotte in Spencer, N.C., you can ride the train, explore old locomotives or come out for the museum’s annual “Day Out with Thomas the Train.” www.nctrans.org
